Resistance is Futile

My wife and I were just discussing what we didn’t like about certain synagogues in town and, specifically, their religious services.

The farther left you travel in the Jewish religious spectrum, the more English you find in the service.  You also find a lot of responsive reading where the congregation reads aloud in unison.

Whenever I find myself in the middle of a responsive reading, I immediately think about the Borg and it loses all religious significance for me.  I told this to my wife a while ago and now such services are ruined for her, too. :)   So, there you go.  Like a bad song, you too will have trouble getting this association out of your head if you’ve ever seen ST:TNG.

In fact, I believe we can thank Star Trek for the recent resurgence of traditional Judaism.

That’s IT! Man, I’ve always wondered why it sounds so artificial compared to hearing Hebrew read aloud.

Why do you think Hebrew spoken in unison doesn’t sound Borg-ish? Well, even if we do all sound like we’re robots saying it, Hebrew actually does have proven links to the Klingon language!

I was thinking about that after I posted. Take a good listen next time a group reads Hebrew in unison… I think you’ll find that it’s not as well-coordinated as an English reading. People are always reading at their own pace. I’m not sure why, but it keeps the Borg out of it.
