Rethinking the Wheelchair

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

The iBot is a new wheelchair concept.  Simply amazing and addresses the fundamental needs of chair-bound people.  Seeing something like this makes me wonder what other things we could revolutionize with some creative thinking.  (Referenced over on the UIE blog.)

This is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time (because it’s so true). Check out the video on youtube.com. Sorry – the video was removed from youtube.com.

Parents no longer behaving badly

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

Last August, I mentioned a new blog titled Parents Behaving Badly.  I wasn’t too thrilled with it for the reasons I mentioned back then and didn’t give it another look.  It seems that the author came around to my way of thinking and has stopped blogging on that theme.  He writes:

I’m sick of holding myself up as if I’m better than these parents. I’m sick of looking down on them, sick of egging on others to mock them just so I can make myself feel good. I’m not helping anybody with this site. I’m just hurting them – and hurting myself.

Good for you, Jay (yes, another Jay).

iStockPhoto is an excellent source of cheap, high quality royalty-free stock images (I’m slowly uploading more photos to them).  You can get screen resolution photos for about $1 each – great for your web site or next presentation.  They have a referal program, so use this link and go sign up and buy some photos!

Spam Killer for WordPress

I’ve finally found a Spam plugin that seems to work.  Download Spam Karma now.

I’ve disabled the annoying random number check thing from the comments.

What’s in a Name?

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Guy Kawasaki (great blog, BTW) points out this interesting (and longish) Salon article titled The Name Game. It’s all about companies that provide naming services for other companies. My favourite quote:

“I’m not suggesting that a company couldn’t get it right with a stroke of insight or genius or luck. But if it’s your own brand, how can you possibly be objective? I mean, would you name your own baby?” Redhill thinks for a minute, then backpedals. “I mean, of course you would name your own baby. But wouldn’t you ask your friends and family for suggestions and recommendations?

We did name our own baby and I think we did a damn fine job of it.

Resistance is Futile

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

My wife and I were just discussing what we didn’t like about certain synagogues in town and, specifically, their religious services.

The farther left you travel in the Jewish religious spectrum, the more English you find in the service.  You also find a lot of responsive reading where the congregation reads aloud in unison.

Whenever I find myself in the middle of a responsive reading, I immediately think about the Borg and it loses all religious significance for me.  I told this to my wife a while ago and now such services are ruined for her, too. :)   So, there you go.  Like a bad song, you too will have trouble getting this association out of your head if you’ve ever seen ST:TNG.

In fact, I believe we can thank Star Trek for the recent resurgence of traditional Judaism.

Had 20 minutes on Sunday to take some photos for the first time in an eon. So, I went to this empty lot and took some shots. I wasn’t happy with any of them, but I do like the rust in this picture.
