Guess-the-Google

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Oh, this is cool. [Guess-the-Google](http://grant.robinson.name/projects/guess-the-google/) is a fun game where you are shown a collection of images and have to guess the Google search keyword that generated them. As the site says, it’s surpisingly addictive.

This is Bad Stuff

Monday, August 29th, 2005

Jay Allen at [The Zero Boss](http://thezeroboss.com/) has created a new blog called [Parents Behaving Badly](http://thezeroboss.com/pbb). Frankly, I don’t know how he does it. An entire blog about disgusting, sad, and pathetic cases of parenting gone horribly wrong? Sure, I don’t want to become that kind of parent, but I’d rather see positive examples, thank you very much.

That said, I had to laugh and agree with his comments in [this post](http://www.thezeroboss.com/pbb/archives/2005/08/to_prevent_kill.html).

Don’t believe everything you think.

It struck me as a very appropriate catch phrase for blogs…

Computers Suck

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

I finally have a bit of time to spend processing photos from my [Rainier trip](http://jay-photo.com/blog/?p=201) and the computer starts acting up. After a few minutes, it slows to a crawl and can’t be restarted without a cold restart. I thought I noticed this problem after watching some AVI videos in Windows Media Player but a reboot fixed it. I should have payed more attention because now it’s happening after a reboot.

I suspect some sort of virus or malware (probably malware) and am now trying to find it. What a pain in the ass and supreme waste of time.

Update: After restoring to the last known good configuration, things seem ok. Spyware scanners only found a few cookies and nothing more serious. I did have a scare where the keyboard stopped working once Windows booted. Did I mention that computers suck?

No one is safe on the Internet

This is one of those sites with a curl on its forehead. [Rate My Teachers](http://www.ratemyteachers.ca/) enables you to, well, rate your teachers. Schools from all over North America are in the database. I found my high school, along with a number of familiar names.

Rogers Customer Support

Problem
———-
Cell phone can no longer connect to voicemail. The phone is programmed to dial *789 to access voicemail and before Sprint was bought by Rogers, this worked fine. Now it doesn’t.

Weird

Monday, August 8th, 2005

I just rediscovered an old note to myself in my wallet. It says:

> Super-human computer intelligence
> Is there a God?
> Does this [computer intelligence] invalidate God?
> What if computers believed??

As I read this, I realize these are some of the themes that [Battlestar Galactica](http://scifi.com/battlestar) is covering.

Note to self: Always date your notes to self. I can’t remember when I wrote the note. I recall reading something at the time and not watching BSG, though.

Blog Changes

Monday, August 8th, 2005

Sorry for the lack of posts and the missing Day 3 story of our Mt. Rainier climb. I’m working on a redesign of this site that will integrate [jay-photo.com](http://jay-photo.com)’s galleries with this blog.

As part of this big change, I will be moving any professional and usability related posts back to a separate blog.

All this work takes time and effort and I have very little time for [obvious reasons](http://jay-photo.com/shulablog).
