New Drive Old Drive
I received the replacement drive from Dell yesterday and it’s a Western Digital. That’s good because it’s not a Maxtor, but it’s also bad for the same reason. I had hoped for an identical drive so we could swap out the logic board with the failing drive and get the data off faster. The recovery process is ongoing. We had recovered 4 GB of files when the recovery computer reset itself (reason unknown). The whole process (scanning the drive and then recovering files) had to start again. Getting anything out of that drive is incredibly slow due to whatever is failing and I hope today is the lucky day for a full recovery.

I truly comiserate with what you’re going through there. And it’s convinced me to invest in an decent storage and backup system.
Perhaps one of these and one of these.

drat, messed up the </a> tag. can you fix it?
also, your <textarea> input box seems to spill over into the right menu column, which is why I couldn’t see what I was typing.

Fixed up the links. I’d love to get some network storage… a bit pricey at this point, though. I think I may get a DVD burner instead (less than CDN$100).
I’ll have to look into the comment page’s style sheet. I’m sure I can fix that. Until then, I suggest you resize your browser window.

Scratch that. I’ve decided on a 2nd internal HDD instead. Also under $100 and much easier to backup to.

Good plan. Maybe set it up as a RAID then for autobackup? (yes, insomnia still)

RAID is more hassle than its worth for us small time users. Duplicating the content to another HDD in the same system is fine though, and something like Second Copy is adequate to back up what you want on a scheduled basis.
PS- why isn’t there a preview button for my comment? I always like to preview.

Well if you really wanted a RAID system, you could do worse than this Of course, we know what the proceeds of the Porsche would go to pay for.
