Crash – Maxtor Sucks

Crap.

The hard drive on my Dell crashed today. Dell is sending a replacement, but I’m very disappointed because 1) it failed after less than four months and 2) my last backup is older than that. “It’ll never happen to me.” Bah.

The drive is a Maxtor. This is the second Maxtor drive to die on me. The first one was maybe a 10 MB drive that died under warranty maybe 15 years ago, so it’s nice to see they’ve kept the same quality standards. I’m going to get a second drive for peace of mind and it’s not going to be a Maxtor. Is Seagate any good?

Update: A bit of web research tells me that everyone has their favourite HD manufacturers. Some people actually swear by Maxtor. I guess it doesn’t really matter and you’ll be burned by the odds eventually.

In the last five years, in three separate computers, I have had five Maxtor hard-drives to die on me. This doesn’t include a WD that lasted three months. When the WD replacement came in I gave it away. So, if you find anyone making a decent hard-drive that could perhaps be used more than five times a week to browse or to play a game or two please let me know too! As far as I am concerned Maxtor and I are through. By the way, 2 of the 5 were replacements that died also. Currently, I am running a Samsung hd. They may be cheap but at least it doesn’t sound like Mrs Folger’s coffee pot perking in the morning.

Jeff: The WD is still going strong and I bought a Seagate as a backup drive. The most important lesson is to have a good backup strategy so losing a drive is just an inconvenience.
